Music makes the world go round!

It is not money that makes the world go round, it is music! Beautiful beats and rhythms touch everyone’s heart and usually do not need to be explained. Music has no face. It is understood by everyone all over the world, regardless of race, religion, age or body size.

There is no doubt about it: music is a universal language and should be encouraged in every possible way. Some people sing like songbirds and can entertain a crowd for hours, but that is not a gift that most of the population shares. Actually, the majority of us ordinary folks have to contain our singing and dancing to our own home or shower stall. That is a fact, but not one that should stop us from trying to express ourselves, especially if we feel we have music notes rushing through our veins. We can always enjoy wonderful tunes through dance, or we can learn how to make our own music.

Musical instruments are devices constructed to generate certain sounds we call music. Buying a musical instrument is not rocket science, it is a matter of picking the sounds you like best and the difficulty level you are willing to master. Each musical tool has its own characteristics such as melody, pitch, rhythm, timbre, loudness, or duration. Musical instruments are divided in four major groups: brass, woodwinds, strings and percussion. There are many brass instruments, including the trombone, trumpet, tuba, saxhorn, cornet, bazooka (not to be confused with an anti-tank weapon), and much more. Their tones are produced by vibration of the lips as the player blows into a tubular resonator. Woodwind instruments produce sounds when the musician blows air against the edge of, or opening in, the instrument. Most commonly known are the flute, Piccolo, clarinet, saxophone, panpipes and English horn. When strings are vibrating you are dealing with, a piano, violin, viola, cello, bass, mandolin, guitar, sitar, banjo or harp. On the other hand, if an instrument is hit with an implement, shaken, rubbed, scraped, or through any other action made to vibrate, you are looking at a percussion instrument. Most of us are familiar with the xylophone, triangle, gongs, cymbals, or the ever so famous drums.

If you decide to take a walk down to the music store to buy an instrument for yourself, your talented offspring, or to give away to someone dear, get familiar with all the options, price ranges, what difficulty level is acceptable, the sounds the instrument should produce or for what kind of music it is intended. If you chose right, you will soon be on your way to fame and fortune. Good luck and see you at the concert!
