Sending your love home is not always easy

Most of us are lucky to have a job close to home. We may not think that way when we are stuck in rush hour traffic, someone is cutting us off, or local idiots in front of us think they’re tourists. “We’ve got places to go, you know!” you mumble, while passing them and throwing an evil look in their direction. It is bothersome indeed, but in the end you do get home and see your loved ones every day.

Some people are not so fortunate and have to travel to earn a living. Others are deployed in foreign countries, or help humanitarian organizations abroad. There are many different reasons why people have to leave the comfort of their home, which can make it quite difficult when it is gift-giving-time.

Business people tend to browse through airport boutiques to find last minute gifts like books, candy, toys, jewelry and clothing. That may be OK for a quick souvenir, but when it comes to a specific present it may not always work out and, in the end, may turn out to be fairly expensive. So why not plan ahead for birthdays, anniversaries, or any other kind of celebrated event?

During a trip one can always find a few minutes to turn on a computer (your own or at an internet café) and find gifts online, which can be delivered at a specific date. If you are afraid to use credit card information on an insecure computer connection, you can always locate a landline and call in your payment. Most reputable merchants have their contact information on their web site, offer toll-free numbers, and deliver worldwide.

If you know you are going to be out of town for an extended period of time you may ask a friend or a relative to buy a gift in your name. You may visit a flower shop and pre-order a glorious bouquet that will be delivered as you specify. If you add an appropriate note card the recipient will be impressed and touched that, despite your absence, you did remember them.

Sometimes it is just impossible to forward a package home. Not all loved ones are wearing suits, or enjoy an extended holiday on a sandy beach. Soldiers are often cut off from communications, and rescue workers may be stationed in remote areas, where they have never heard of fancy shops or even a telephone. They may not be able to send anything at all, and if they can manage to have a hand drawn card, or letter delivered, or make a quick phone call, it may be way past the event. That does not mean they were not thinking of you, or no longer love you. They probably missed you more than ever and most likely, used the waves of their heart to send you many wonderful thoughts, wishes and kisses, the day you needed them the most. Never underestimate the power of love and gifting!
