Cool tech tools for students
Getting your first-born ready for a life in college or university can be a bit frustrating. It is a new experience with, quite often, not enough information to properly plan and prepare for. All you know is that the high tech calculator which got you through math class, no longer will be enough, and that, today, a computer and an Internet-connection have become a necessity rather than a luxury.
There is no way around it, getting a student ready for a higher education starts with a laptop computer. Small, lightweight, and wireless, a notebook or laptop are the ideal choice when it comes to a computer. They are easy to carry around, and with an integrated Hi-Fi connection the student can surf the Net wherever the Internet is available, be it at home, the library, or a café. Buy one with a dual-core processor for fast speed and smoother multitasking. Equally important are a long-lasting battery, multiple USB ports and an integrated DVD burner. Also, equip the computer with ample security. A steel cable with a security lock and appropriate software should definitely be in place before the student starts class.
Computer users prefer cordless accessibility to interact with their processor. The newest technologies offer wireless mice and keyboards, devices which are practical and are highly recommended. Why struggle with disturbing cables when you don’t have to?
“Hot keys” on keyboards are features that allow access to the Web, email or instant messaging programs with just one touch. A music player is another ideal gadget for students. Most players with hard drives and flash memory can also store data such as Power Point presentations, or Word and Excel files. It is an easy way to transport data from one PC to another.
For the forgetful or wary, portable external hard drives to back up schoolwork and important files are critical. These components simply plug into a computer USB port and store lots of data. But, what are you with all that information if you cannot print? An MFP, or multifunction printer is a machine which can adequately print, fax, scan, and make copies. It is a great space and money saver. Of course, if you want speed and better quality printing, it is going to cost you extra.
Staying in touch can be important to both the supportive family, as well as the hard-working student. Why pay for expensive long-distance conversations when you can chat and see each other for free? A web camera or webcam sends images across the globe via the world-wide web. A built-in microphone will add sound and voila, it seems as if you’re sitting next to each other.
There are of course other tech gadgets. Depending on your budget, you can add a docking station, digital pens, noise cancelling headphones, Dictaphone, a Wi-Fi detector, and let’s not forget… a reliable alarm clock. You don’t want junior to miss any classes, do you?
