Giving back to a favourite teacher

Giving, because one feels obligated, will never lead to satisfaction. Gifting should be done because someone cares, out of appreciation, gratitude, friendship or love. A teacher’s job is not an easy one, and seems never ending. Good professionals take their responsibility seriously and know that the future of so many children is in their hands. They go out of their way to expose students to profound knowledge, trigger curiosity to learn more, and provide them with the necessary tools to function in a strict, stressful, and demanding society, once they have graduated.

Instead of the same wacky apple themed knick knacks, mugs, cookies and the traditional boxes of candies, why not think out of the box when it is time to show your child’s teacher some appreciation? Think about the stress these educators endure, and maybe a gift certificate to a spa, or salon, or a basket filled with refreshing bath oils and salts would be more appropriate than a few bars of glycerin soap.

Teachers are the corner stones of our civilization, builders who are molding our future. Giving them a gift you picked out of a discount bin really does not show them how thankful you are for leading your child down a path that can pilot great success. As they monitor us, so should we observe them! Do not give a pair of earrings if the teacher’s ears aren’t pierced. Unless you ask first, do not bring a bouquet of flowers or a bag of nuts to the classroom, especially if you know the teacher has allergies. Think practical, and present your child’s mentor with gift certificates to restaurants, movie rental stores, bookstores, or even department stores where he or she can buy something useful. It may not be publically known, but many teachers pay for student school supplies out of their own pockets.

A teacher is a person, who provides direct classroom education to students, participates in extracurricular activities, organizes field trips, and accompanies the students on those outings. Schoolteachers won’t turn their back on a gift, but would be much happier if parents would show more respect and support when it comes to the studies of their offspring. Parents should be more involved, and spend quality time with your child(ren), teach them right from wrong, and how to take responsibility for their actions. They should help their kids when they struggle, and get them the help they need, whether that would be medical, emotional, or academic. Those are gifts teachers appreciate the most. In conclusion: as in many gifting cases, the thought behind the endowment is often worth more than its monetary value.
