Useful Baby Gifts for first-time parents

Caring for a new baby is one of the most joyous and challenging times in a parent’s life, especially if we are talking about a couple expecting their first born. For them it is easy to feel anxious, nervous, and unsure. First-time parents often need a lot of handholding. Getting ready for the arrival of their little bundle of joy may be confusing, and expensive, unless family and friends bring them useful and practical gifts. In that case, the “old faithful” gifts may indeed be the best way to help out.

Not to make any embarrassing or useless purchases, the best thing one can do is ask the new parents flat-out what baby accessories they already have, what kind of gifts they prefer, how the baby’s room is organized, what colours and patterns they favor, and if they know what the baby’s gender will be.

Clothes are one of the most bought gifts. When buying tees, sleepwear, body suits, rompers and tights, jackets, socks and booties, it is always better to buy them a few sizes ahead of time. The baby will grow into them, and mum and dad don’t get stuck with a bag full of newborn pieces. If the couple plans more children, pick a more neutral colour, with a less busy pattern. Remember, unisex clothing can be re-used. And talking about second hand options: not everyone was born with a silver spoon in their mouth, so do not hesitate to ask your relatives or friends, if they would appreciate some gently used clothes. Most of the time, the answer will be: yes!

Safety products assure peace of mind. These may include baby monitors, travel head rests, neck roll cushions, locks and latches, gates and barriers and outlet and cord safety covers stopping children from accessing power points whether in use or not.

Browsing through baby products can be fun, finding that ideal gift, not so much. Did you know that heat sensor spoons have tips that change colour when the food is too hot? Other necessary care items such as dribble bibs, clinical thermometers, medicators, a finger toothbrush, training cups, dishes, spoons and bowls, or soothers make great stocking stuffers, or gift basket fillers.

Playtime items should be stimulating, colourful and fun. Exploring interesting textures, shapes and sounds can help the baby develop motor skills. Whatever you buy, make sure it is age appropriate and preferably washable.

The more expensive gift items, such as changing tables, strollers, car seats, a year supply of diapers, or opening a sizable college fund, are not for everyone’s budget. Believe me! Nobody will hold it against you, if you stick to more affordable gifts. Just take your pick from handmade or personalized gifts, garments, footwear, nursery equipment to nappies, bags, bibs, hats, wraps and linen, books, rattles, mobiles, gift baskets, hygiene and safety products, lotions, creams, toys and much, much more!
